As humans we have the natural need for bonding connection because we are an innately a social species. Social connections are a powerful component in our lives as they play a vital role in our survival in our sense of belonging. Most importantly, our bonds and feelings of connection play an important role for our overall health; they have been shown to lower addictive behavior relapse rates, help with depression, and reduce our negative responses to stress. Connection and bonding are critical component in the prevention of relapse. It is important that people in recovery feel a sense of belonging and have a strong support system to help them through challenging times.
Sharing Positive Experiences with Others
As human beings we all need social support, especially from trusted sources. It is important that recovering addicts have a community and safe haven to be able to share their life experiences, accomplishments, and struggles. Being able to share positive experiences with who offer caring and empathy has an immense impact on positive emotions such as happiness and satisfaction, according to the JOURNAL OF SOCIAL AND PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS. Successful treatment programs include lots of opportunity for social interactions and recovery support. At RESIDENCE XII we have a strong and active Alumnae group. They provide a warm environment and sense of community for women giving them every opportunity to stay on the path to recovery through building strong relationships.
Strong Support Networks
Our INPATIENT, OUTPATIENT, and FAMILY PROGRAMS offer an inviting and safe environment to learn the fundamentals of bonding and connection. By participating in social activities, group sessions, volunteer work, our patients learn the skills necessary to help them on their journey through recovery. Volunteering and sponsoring are a critical piece of our program and offer opportunities to feel a sense of connection and satisfaction. A strong support network is essential; whether the connection is with family, friends, therapists or alumni.
Human Connection and Brain Chemicals
Are you aware that human and social interactions can benefit brain activity in positive ways?
- One is OXYTOCIN, also known as the “love” hormone. Oxytocin is released through skin-to-skin contact and simple close communication with another person helps develop a sense of intimacy, trust, and healthy relationships. It is part of the hormonal formula for creating and maintaining solid bonds and interactions.
- SEROTONIN is heightened by social interaction; mood and willpower are influenced by it. The prefrontal cortex of the brain relies on serotonin as it controls personality and executive functioning. A lack of serotonin results in physical and mental problems such as depression, anxiety, weight gain, and insomnia. Serotonin levels can be elevated by participating in talk therapy, sharing happy memories, smiling, and laughing.
- ENDORPHINS are boosted by positive social interactions and by energetic physical activity. Laughing and stretching, and working out at the gym are great ways to boost endorphin levels.
