The patients at RESIDENCE XII have one thing in common — they are struggling with the challenges of chemical dependency. Everyone needs help at some point in their lives and Residence XII has programs to provide support, strength, and guidance during all phases of the journey towards sobriety. Perhaps you are wondering why people drink alcohol in the first place! There are many reasons. Here are some of the most common reasons why people choose to drink in today’s world. Understanding this may help you better understand your loved ones choices and why it can be so difficult to get and stay sober.

1. Social Lubricant

In our culture, drinking is customary. It is used as a social lubricant to lessen tensions and to calm nerves. It is also used as a means to bond and nurture relationships amongst acquaintances, friends, family, and even co-workers. Drinking in our culture is so commonplace that it even has its own dedicated time-frame more commonly known as “Happy Hour”. When living in a society that sings and praises its members for drinking, people do just that—drink.

2. Relieve Stress

The societal “norms” and expectations of the world we live in today have become very unrealistic and difficult to attain. This creates a certain level of stress that can be extremely detrimental to the mental and physical well-being of a person. Often times, stressful times push people to turn to alcohol. This common mistake leads people to believe they are escaping life’s little stressors, when in all honesty it is only a temporary solution that can lead to a lifelong problem.

3. COPING MECHANISM

Similar to relieving stress, people think that drinking will help them cope with challenges. It acts as a temporary mind-numbing activity that can calm nerves and anxiety. It is not uncommon for a significant life change such as losing a job, ending a relationship or loss of a loved one to trigger drinking.

4. Isolation

Isolation is another reason why some turn to drinking. Poor support networks, decreased mobility, and limited access to transportation all lead someone to an increased risk to drink. Senior citizens are particularly vulnerable to isolation.
